The annual Winkle-Toti-Winkle event took place yesterday, with this year being the first that the wind delivered for the kitesurfers. A great South Coast downwind was held in warm water, steady wind and under blue skies. An ‘eye in the sky’ spectator stationed at Warner Beach collected these shots.

The Winkle-Toti-Winkle multi-discipline event is set to take place on December 16 at Winkle Beach in Southern KZN. This is the second year that kiting has been a part of the line-up, and if the wind predicitions remain unchanged – it looks to be a bumper year for the festival.

South Africa, and especially the mother city, is a melting pot of international talent when it comes to kitesurfing. A great example of this is Fred Kloren, owner of Xelerator Kiteboards. Freds background includes a BSc in Industrial Automation, so it’s no surprise that he is producing a product that has earned its respective riders five national records.
With the current exchange rate – its good to know that there is a world class product available on our doorstep – manufactured by an all round great guy, as I found out after some Q and A with Fred himself.

Sports Chiropractor Andrew Jones takes a look at injuries in kitesurfing, and produces some really interesting results about the sport’s injury statistics.
For example, did you know that according to the statistics there are 7 injuries for every 1000 hours of practice but this is doubled in competition time (16.5 injuries for every 1000 hours of competition) (Nickel, 2004).
